The Fox and the Beautiful Mushroom
Today’s weather is quite pleasant, thanks to a morning rain shower that left the air especially fresh.
Fat Bear and Fox were walking on the grassy ground in the forest, heading to their friend Little Rabbit’s place for a chat. On the way, they met Little Hedgehog coming back with mushrooms he had collected. Seeing Fat Bear and Fox approaching, Little Hedgehog was delighted. He took out a particularly large and beautiful mushroom from his basket and handed it to Fox, saying:
“There are many mushrooms in the forest after the rain. I don’t know if this big mushroom I picked is poisonous or not.”
Fox stretched his neck, carefully examining the mushroom.
“This mushroom is very beautiful,” said Fox. “It probably isn’t poisonous!”
“How can you just say probably?” Fat Bear said. “Little Hedgehog, let me help you ask Little Rabbit. He knows mushrooms the best.”
They all went to Little Rabbit’s door together. Little Rabbit looked through the mushrooms in Little Hedgehog’s basket and picked out two, saying, “These two mushrooms are poisonous. Do not eat them!” Among them was the particularly large and beautiful mushroom that Fox had inspected.
Little Hedgehog threw away the two mushrooms.
In the evening, when Fat Bear and Fox were heading home and passing by Little Hedgehog’s house, they smelled a pleasant aroma wafting out. Little Hedgehog invited Fat Bear and Fox inside and served them each a big bowl of mushroom soup.
“How does it taste?” Fat Bear asked Fox.
“It’s wonderful!” Fox smacked his lips. “But I must thank you. If you hadn’t asked Little Rabbit to check again, after drinking this mushroom soup, I would have been—” Saying this, Fox fell to the ground motionless.
Fat Bear went over and tickled Fox, saying, “Fox, it seems you probably aren’t dead!”
Fox jumped up laughing and said, “Not probably, I’m definitely not dead. But from now on, I won’t casually say ‘probably’ anymore.”
