The bear decided to take a trip to the city. He walked along the road. Today, he was wearing his finest coat, his best hat, trimmed with silk all around, and his boots were so shiny they dazzled.
“Today, my outfit is quite impressive!” the bear said to himself. “With this grand attire, I’m sure to leave a deep impression when I go to the city.”
A crow perched on a branch overheard the bear’s self-talk and said, “Forgive me, but I strongly disagree with you. Given your size and demeanor, you shouldn’t be wearing such clothes. I just came back from the city. Would you like to hear how the impressive folks in the city are dressing nowadays?”
“Oh, please tell me quickly!” the bear said. “I’ve long wanted to wear the latest stylish clothes of the most impressive city folks.”
“This year,” the crow said, “the most impressive people in the city no longer wear hats. Instead, they put a frying pan on their heads as a hat. As for coats, your kind of coat is outdated. Now, it’s fashionable to wrap a bedsheet around yourself as a coat. Boots are also out of style; now, they put paper bags on their feet.”
“Oh, no!” the bear exclaimed. “My outfit is completely outdated! Thank goodness you reminded me, or else I would have been laughed at if I went to the city like this!”
The bear quickly turned around and went back home. Without hesitation, he threw off his coat, took off his hat, and removed his boots. Then, imitating the stylish folks from the city, he placed a frying pan on his head, wrapped himself in a bedsheet, and put two big paper bags on his feet. He turned around in front of the mirror and looked at himself. “Ah, the impressive people in the city really know how to think of fresh and novel styles!”
The bear went to the city and walked down the main street. People pointed and laughed at the bear. At first, they chuckled quietly, but soon they burst into loud laughter.
“Today, this bear must have gone mad!”
This made the bear so embarrassed that he wished he could immediately burrow into the ground! He quickly turned around and fled the city, running home as fast as he could. On the way, he encountered the crow again.
“Crow, everything you told me was a lie!” the bear said angrily.
“I never said what I told you was true. Why did you believe it?” The crow said, then flew up from the tree with a “whoosh.”
The crow flew in the sky, cawing and laughing loudly.
The bear stared dumbly at the sky.
