Mother Nature has four children named Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Mother Nature said, “You cannot go out together; you must go out one by one.”
Spring is the first to go out and play. As soon as he steps out, he calls for Sister Spring Breeze and Little Sister Spring Rain. They play together while shouting, “Spring is here, spring is here.” Children see Spring and take off their winter coats, running outside. Green leaves start to sprout from the branches, and Spring Rain sings “drip, drop, drip, drop.” Everyone has so much fun playing with Spring.
Summer is eager to come out and play. As soon as he appears, Spring hides away. Summer brings with him the scorching Sun, searching everywhere for Spring. At the pond, the little fish dive deep to escape the heat; in the forest, the leaves curl up from the warmth.
The children feel so hot and uncomfortable, saying, “Spring has already gone home.” Summer asks, “Does anyone else know that Spring has gone home?” The cicadas chirp, “We know, we know. We know he has gone home.”
Seeing everyone suffering from the heat, Mother Nature calls Summer back home and lets Autumn come out to play. Autumn brings cool breezes. The children exclaim, “How refreshing, how refreshing.” Autumn visits the orchard, where apples smile red and pears smile yellow. In the fields, crops bend over in laughter. The leaves on the trees, like little birds, flutter down to dance with Autumn.
Winter has waited a long time and now it’s his turn to play. Winter is good friends with Grandpa North Wind and Grandpa Snow. As soon as he comes out, Grandpa North Wind and Grandpa Snow hurry over. Grandpa North Wind plays until he’s tired, huffing and puffing. Grandpa Snow, tired from playing, sends down little snowflakes to accompany Winter.
While they play, it’s time to celebrate the New Year. Winter and the children build snowmen, set off firecrackers, eat dumplings, and joyfully celebrate the New Year. After the festivities, Winter is still not ready to go home. Spring can’t wait any longer and is eager to come out and play. Thus, Mother Nature’s four children—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—each take turns going out to play.
