The Clever Hedgehog Outsmarts the Fox

How beautiful the spring morning is, with the bright red sun warmly shining. The green canal water flows gently. The weeping willows by the water, covered with tender yellow leaves, sway softly.

The little hedgehog and the little squirrel hop and skip to the grassy area by the riverbank to play a game of “cat and mouse.” The little hedgehog is the “mouse,” and the little squirrel is the “cat.”

The “cat” squirrel first closes his eyes, letting the “mouse” hedgehog find a place to hide. The “mouse” hedgehog quietly slips through the small forest and runs to the pier. Seeing a stack of a dozen or so empty oil barrels, he sneaks into one, thinking he has hidden himself well. However, the hedgehog’s every move is watched by the little fox lurking in the cave nearby. The hedgehog is unaware that he is already in danger.

The hedgehog is the little fox’s arch-enemy. After school, when the hedgehog and the squirrel are on their way home, the fox blocks their path, demanding the squirrel buy him a pack of cigarettes. The hedgehog snorts and leads the squirrel past the fox. The fox lunges at the hedgehog, but the hedgehog curls up into a ball, pricking the fox’s mouth full of blood. It’s a huge embarrassment.

The fox vows revenge. “Great! Today, I finally have my chance,” the fox sneers as he crawls out of the cave and tiptoes toward the oil barrel where the hedgehog is hiding. With a strong push, the oil barrel starts rolling down toward the river.

The “mouse” hedgehog is lying at the barrel’s edge, holding his breath, listening for any movement from the “cat” squirrel. Suddenly, the barrel starts to roll faster and faster. Just as he is about to cry for help, he hears the fox’s laughter: “Haha, let the hedgehog feed the fish!” “So it’s the fox’s doing!” the hedgehog thinks.

Even if he jumps out of the barrel, he will roll down the slope into the river and drown. He furrows his brow and comes up with a plan. He quickly rolls to the bottom of the barrel. The barrel falls into the water with a splash, and after taking in a bit of water, it stands upright with the opening facing up, floating in the water like a round tub, bobbing up and down as it drifts downstream.

Drifting along, the barrel reaches a willow tree. The long willow branches dip into the barrel, swaying above the hedgehog’s head. The hedgehog grabs a willow branch, pulls himself close to the shore, and jumps out with all his might, finally reaching the bank.

Once ashore, the hedgehog realizes that if he leaves, the fox will surely bully the squirrel. So he quickly runs back. At the pier, sure enough, the fox is sitting on an oil barrel, swinging his legs, extorting cigarettes from the squirrel. Seeing the hedgehog alive, the fox is momentarily stunned but then pretends to be calm and mocks, “Hedgehog, you’re back from your trip?” The hedgehog smartly smiles and says, “Fox, thank you.

From the barrel, the whole world looked like a kaleidoscope, spinning colorful and fast, even more thrilling than riding a roller coaster at an amusement park!” The fox believes him and demands, “I helped you, so you have to help me. Let me have some fun too!”

The fox climbs into a large oil barrel, grabbing the edge with both hands, looking out with wide eyes, and commands, “Push me hard!” The hedgehog winks at the squirrel, and together they push with all their might, sending the barrel with the fox inside rolling quickly down the slope into the river. With a splash, the barrel tips forward, filling with water, and the fox is trapped inside, sinking to the bottom.
