The Story of the Gold King

The Gold King owned all the gold in the world and was the richest man alive. His clothes were made of golden threads and adorned with pearls. His pants were woven with silver threads, with a few emeralds on the cuffs. Wherever he went, people would say, “His clothes are so beautiful and glittering!”

The Gold King’s home was on a beautiful mountain, which he bought entirely, forbidding anyone from playing there. Every day, the Gold King drove his diamond car around town, showing off his wealth.

One day, the Gold King saw some children standing at the foot of his mountain. The children pleaded, “Sir, may we play on your mountain for a while?” The Gold King was furious and shouted, “You brats, get lost! I hate people playing on my mountain!”

The children left, feeling very dejected. The Gold King angrily drove his diamond car to pick up a custom-made fur coat. On the way, he encountered an old beggar who said, “Richest Gold King, please give some money to a poor man like me!”

The Gold King glanced at the beggar with disdain and said, “You’re so poor, what could you possibly give me in return for my charity?”

The beggar replied, “Sir, I will repay you with kindness!”

The Gold King laughed and said, “Kindness? How much is that worth? Don’t try to fool me; I won’t be tricked!”

The beggar was very saddened and said, “Sir, I used to have money, but I spent it all to treat my wife and children’s illnesses. Without money, they will die. Please help me, richest Gold King!”

The Gold King ignored the beggar and drove away in his diamond car. The beggar despaired, crying, “Why won’t the Gold King help those who need money the most?”

At that moment, a goddess appeared. The beggar, still crying, asked her, “Why do those who need money not have any, while the Gold King possesses all the world’s wealth?”

The goddess gently wiped the beggar’s tears and said, “Treat everything with a kind heart, and miracles will happen.”

The beggar, unwilling to give up, said, “I have to beg on the streets to treat my wife and children. The Gold King drives a diamond car and wears golden clothes, why doesn’t he have any compassion?”

The goddess smiled as she listened and then said, “Remember, no matter how life treats you, never lose your kind heart. As long as there is kindness, miracles will happen.” After saying this, the goddess disappeared, and the beggar continued to beg.

One day, a small boy who had been begging all day without eating anything was seen by the beggar. The beggar shared his food with the boy. When the beggar was wealthy, he liked helping others, and even now, as a beggar, he still tried to help those around him.

Gradually, people who had been helped by the beggar learned about his situation and brought him money and goods, comforting him by saying, “Everyone has hard times; don’t lose hope!”

Soon, the beggar used the money given by others to cure his wife and children. The beggar thought, “The goddess was right, as long as there is kindness, miracles will happen.”

The Gold King’s wealth continued to grow, but he found himself increasingly unhappy. When he showed off his luxurious clothes, no one praised them anymore. No children came to the foot of the mountain to ask for permission to play. The Gold King felt that he was not special anymore and was very depressed.

Winter came quickly, and one of the windows in the Gold King’s house broke. The cold wind blew through the hole, making the Gold King shiver. He drove his diamond car to find a window repairman. The repairman said, “The beggar’s window is also broken; I need to fix his first.”

The Gold King’s face turned green with anger, and he said, “Fix mine, and I’ll give you a bag of gold!”

The repairman said, “I’m sorry, Gold King. When I had no food, he gave me the biggest help. Now that his wife and children have just recovered, they cannot bear the cold. I must fix his window first, you will have to wait another day!”

The Gold King became even angrier and told the repairman, “I have plenty of money, I won’t repair my window, I’ll build a new house!”

Back home, the Gold King caught a cold. He went to see a doctor, and the doctor said, “A child is in critical condition, I must save the child first.”

The Gold King said, “Quickly treat my cold! I’ll give you two bags of gold, hurry up!”

The doctor said, “I’m sorry, Gold King. The child is in critical condition, I cannot let a lovely child die for two bags of gold. You know, he always sings to me! Without his songs, life would be so dull!”

The Gold King snorted and said, “I won’t see the doctor anymore, what’s the big deal, I own all the wealth in the world!” Then he drove his diamond car home.

Back home, the Gold King grew more and more angry and fell ill in bed. The servants asked, “Should I find someone to fix the window?”

The Gold King said, “I won’t repair the window!”

The servant asked, “Shall I call the doctor?”

The Gold King, impatient, shouted, “Don’t go, pack your things and leave!”

The servant left, and the Gold King lay at home alone. He coughed and sneezed every day, but refused to see a doctor.

The weather grew colder, and he stayed by the heater, never leaving the house. The children, seeing the Gold King rarely going out, quietly ran to his mountain to play. A thick layer of snow covered the pine trees on the slope, and the children sang, danced, built snowmen, and had snowball fights around the pine trees.

The Gold King had not heard singing and laughter for a long time. Seeing so many children, he felt very happy. He got out of bed and asked the children outside, “Is it spring already?”

The children, seeing the Gold King not chasing them away, happily said, “Spring is coming soon, Gold King, your clothes are beautiful!”

The Gold King was very pleased to hear someone praising him. Suddenly, he sneezed loudly. One child said, “The Gold King is sick, let’s get a doctor for him!”

Soon, the doctor treated the Gold King. The window repairman, knowing the Gold King allowed the children to play on the mountain, also repaired the Gold King’s window.

The Gold King suddenly realized how selfish he had been, but everyone was still so kind to him. From then on, the Gold King often took the children to play on his mountain. He sold his diamond car to help a seriously ill child. He sold his glittering clothes to pay for many poor children’s tuition. The Gold King often wore plain clothes, but whenever people saw him, they would say, “The Gold King’s clothes are beautiful, the Gold King is so handsome!”

The Gold King’s gold became less and less, but he didn’t regret it at all. He was very happy because he had many true friends who genuinely liked him.
