Heartbreaking Love Story

Since Vincent’s father developed Alzheimer’s disease, everything at home seemed to get mixed up. His father’s thoughts were often confused, and he would frequently say strange things out of the blue. For example, “Have you finished your homework today? Why did you play games instead of studying last night?”

Vincent thought that if it weren’t for his mother, things would be much worse. His mother took care of his father with unwavering dedication, allowing Vincent to live and work in another city, only needing to visit his father every few weeks.

However, a new problem soon arose. One time, when Vincent visited his father, his father, avoiding his mother’s attention, quietly called him aside and whispered to him, “I like the girl living next door. She’s so beautiful. I must marry her!”

Vincent was taken aback by his father’s words. His father was almost eighty years old, how could he say such a thing? But Vincent quickly calmed down, thinking that his father might just be confused for a moment and joking with him. Vincent comforted himself with this thought.

But things didn’t turn out as Vincent expected. A week later, his father called him, saying, “Please help me choose a high-quality diamond ring. It must have a large stone. I need it for my proposal.”

“Who are you proposing to?” Vincent asked, unable to hold back his laughter.

“Haven’t I already told you? The girl living next door! I’ve found out she doesn’t have a boyfriend and she likes me very much,” his father said, sounding displeased.

“Alright, I’ll do it. I’ll bring it to you next time I visit,” Vincent said, then hung up the phone. He knew his father’s behavior was a sign of the worsening condition the doctor had warned about: “People with this disease will have increasingly poor memory and more inexplicable moments. Family members need to be mentally prepared. Never let the patient get angry or upset.”

More than a week later, when Vincent visited his father again, as soon as he entered the door, his father enthusiastically hugged him and pulled him into the inner room. After closing the door, his father said, “Please take out the wedding ring. I can’t wait any longer.”

Vincent helplessly spread his hands and shrugged. He had no wedding ring with him.

His father was very unhappy and almost shouted, “Do you know how much I love her? She is kind, virtuous, intelligent, and beautiful. She is simply sent by God to spend my life with me. But you forgot to buy my engagement ring!”

“But dad, you already have a wife. How should I explain this to mom?”

“Shut up. I don’t have a disobedient child like you. Do you want to stop this beautiful marriage predestined by heaven? Then I’ll break your legs.”

To keep his mother from knowing about this, Vincent finally decided to give in to his “confused” father and promised to bring the engagement ring next time.

But how could he explain all this to his mother? In their younger years, his father had often worked away from home, and it was his mother who managed the entire household. Now, in her old age, she was once again taking care of his sick father without complaint. Yet his father had fallen in love with the girl next door, who was much younger. He had found a lover!

But remembering the doctor’s advice not to let the patient get angry, which could easily lead to sudden death, Vincent finally bought the ring and brought it to his father on his next visit.

Vincent didn’t know what would happen next—would his parents divorce and become a laughingstock among their neighbors? He barely slept that night, worrying about the future.

The next morning, his mother came to his bedside. “Son, do you know? Your father proposed to me last night. Look, this is the ring he gave me. The stone is so big,” his mother said, choking up. “His illness and the resulting poor memory made him think we were not yet married, so he begged me to marry him.”

Vincent’s eyes also began to moisten. The truth was finally revealed. He had misunderstood his father. Yes, before they became husband and wife, his mother had lived next door to his father. That’s how they met and fell in love.

It turned out, the kind, virtuous, intelligent, and beautiful girl his father talked about was his mother all along!
