Classic Adult Love Story 2
The College Entrance Exam Seemed Like a Joke
Later, Bai Qiran graduated from an ordinary university in the province. He could have attended a better university, but back then, he was young and passionate, deeply in love with a girl in the neighboring class, Li Hong. Her grades weren’t great, but Bai Qiran didn’t care; he wasn’t in love with her grades. Youthful passion doesn’t consider the distant future.
That summer, it rained for two days, bringing a pleasant coolness. The battle of the final year of high school had just ended, and there was no time yet to savor the pain of parting when the college entrance exam results came out. As expected, Li Hong didn’t get into a university, while Bai Qiran ended up at an ordinary university due to what he called a bad performance.
There were complaints, confusion, and a bit of contempt, but it all faded like the wind. Another surprising result was that Bai Qiran’s classmate, Ma Xiaoru, one of the top students in their class, also ended up at the same university due to a poor performance. Despite numerous temptations, neither of them chose to retake the exam.
Could Tears Be a Disguise?
The night the results came out, Li Hong cried beside Bai Qiran, turning into a tearful mess. Bai Qiran, who usually joked with her, had never seen her cry like this. He hugged her awkwardly, occasionally saying a few comforting words.
“Don’t cry, consider retaking the exam.”
“Hmm, I know. I’ll find you next year.”
“Hmm, I’ll wait for you.”
“…”
Li Hong continued to sob until after 1 a.m. Bai Qiran walked her back home and said goodbye. He felt heavy-hearted, thinking that if he had done a bit worse, he could have gone to the same university as Li Hong. With a sigh, he dragged his weary body back home. Actually, Ma Xiaoru also cried throughout the night, but she didn’t want anyone to see her tears.
Bai Qiran woke up groggily, without the glaring sunlight making the weather seem less hot. It was already afternoon. Li Hong called, “Let’s break up.”
“Why?”
“Because we’ve graduated. Beep beep…”
He stood there, bewildered, looking out the window, and said, “Today, it’s quite cool.”
Grandpa’s Smile
Bai Qiran visited his grandfather’s house again. Upon entering, he saw a prominent phrase: “The birth of new life must go through countless trials and tribulations, a rebirth from the ashes.”
“Xiaoran, what’s wrong? Are you unhappy?”
Bai Qiran’s honest smile appeared, “Grandpa, you’re the best to me. Whenever I see you, don’t I always follow you around with a big smile? Right, Grandpa?”
“Xiaoran knows how to make Grandpa happy. Have you decided whether to go to that university?”
Bai Qiran walked to the door and looked at the sky, “Hmm, I’m going.”
“Good, as long as you’ve decided.”
“Xiaoran, look at how beautifully Grandma is smiling.”
Bai Qiran looked at Grandpa’s smile and felt a weight lift from his heart. He smiled, “Yes, very beautiful.” Then he turned to look at Grandma’s photo, “She’s always been beautiful.”
Heaven or Hell
Bai Qiran rushed to university, finding everything new and exciting. But soon, he became a standard machine, trapped in the routine with no purpose or passion.
Thankfully, Bai Qiran remembered Grandpa’s kindness. Grandpa was already half of his life. Bai Qiran later learned that during his most diligent study period, Grandpa had fallen ill, but no one told Bai Qiran. Everyone knew how important Grandpa was to him and what he would do if he found out.
In the flashy university, Bai Qiran became disheartened. One unknown Sunday, he saw a familiar figure. Ma Xiaoru saw the desolate Bai Qiran and smiled at him. Bai Qiran joked, “Another look will cost you.” Ma Xiaoru didn’t speak immediately.
She walked closer and said slowly, “You’ve changed. This place is your hell.” She turned and left. Bai Qiran didn’t see the tears in her eyes. He stood there, stunned, watching her disappear.
That night, Bai Qiran received a letter: “The high school version of you, is it still there?” Just one sentence. Bai Qiran didn’t know how Ma Xiaoru managed to get it to him. Looking back at his neat bed and well-organized books, Bai Qiran smiled and wrote a reply, “I can turn hell into heaven.”
Bai Qiran’s grades no longer fell below the pass mark, while Ma Xiaoru remained outstanding. Bai Qiran would always say that Ma Xiaoru was smart, knowing that it was his lack of effort.
That Blue Sky Is Our Future
Although everyone was together in high school, the main task was not to develop relationships. By now, Bai Qiran and Ma Xiaoru were no longer shy or evasive, walking openly on the streets, planning their future.
Growing up, people said Bai Qiran had changed. He wasn’t mischievous anymore; he had truly grown up, learning to focus and put in effort.
Whenever Ma Xiaoru visited Bai Qiran’s home, Bai Qiran loved to hold up the badge left by his grandfather to the sun and say, “That blue sky is our future, the future of our little family, and the future of our hometown.”
Fate is a joke, always striking at the peak of glory…
With red eyes, Ma Xiaoru looked at Bai Qiran. Bai Qiran gently tapped her nose, “You’re still by my side…”
