Clumsy Wolf Falls into a Trap
Clumsy Wolf walked along the path for a while and came to a river.
He ran to the river to drink some water.
A little lamb was also drinking water at the river.
The lamb saw Clumsy Wolf and got so scared that he turned around and ran. He was so frightened that his legs went weak, and he fell into the river with a splash. The river was swift, and the rope around the lamb’s neck choked him, making it hard for him to breathe.
Clumsy Wolf immediately jumped into the river and pulled the lamb out.
The lamb, now wet and shivering with fear, trembled all over.
Clumsy Wolf asked the lamb, “Are you cold?”
The lamb thought, “I’m not cold, I’m scared.” But the lamb didn’t dare to answer and just kept trembling. Clumsy Wolf thought the lamb was shivering because he was cold. He hugged the lamb, trying to warm him up.
Seeing Clumsy Wolf hugging him, the lamb thought the wolf was going to eat him. He remembered his mother telling him the story of “The Wolf and the Lamb,” where the wolf always found a reason to eat the lamb. But this wolf was even scarier; he didn’t even bother finding a reason before eating the lamb.
The lamb said, “Dear Mr. Wolf, just now when we were drinking water, you were upstream, and I was downstream. I didn’t dirty your drinking water.”
Clumsy Wolf replied, “I didn’t say you dirtied the water.”
The lamb continued, “Dear Mr. Wolf, I also haven’t spoken ill of you behind your back.”
Clumsy Wolf said, “I didn’t say you spoke ill of me.”
The lamb added, “I have no father or grandfather, so they couldn’t have spoken ill of you either.”
Clumsy Wolf, feeling confused, said, “Are you out of your mind? What are you talking about?”
Summoning his courage, the lamb asked, “Then why do you want to eat me?”
“Eat you?” Clumsy Wolf was shocked. “You think I want to eat you? I have no intention of eating you! I just wanted to dry you off because you were shivering.”
The lamb said, “If you don’t eat me, I won’t shiver anymore. Goodbye, dear Mr. Wolf, and thank you for saving me earlier.”
Clumsy Wolf asked the lamb, “Where are you going? Can I go with you?”
The lamb thought, “No wonder he said he wouldn’t eat me. This nasty wolf must think I’m too small and skinny, without much meat. Now he wants to follow me home to see if there are any other sheep he can eat. But all the sheep in my family have already been eaten by him.”
The lamb said, “I’m not going anywhere. I said goodbye to you because I want you to leave. Don’t you see I’m tied up?”
Thanks to the lamb’s reminder, Clumsy Wolf finally noticed that the lamb was indeed tied up with a rope around his neck, with the other end of the rope tied to a tree by the river. Clumsy Wolf said, “Why are you tied up like this? It’s not very free.”
The lamb said, “It’s not me who tied myself up; it’s the ranger who did it.”
“I’ll help you untie it,” Clumsy Wolf said. He opened his mouth and bit through the rope.
The lamb was now free. He immediately took a few steps back to maintain a safe distance from Clumsy Wolf, feeling less scared. At the same time, the lamb thought, “I must avenge my mother and brothers.”
In the past six months, the lamb’s mother and brothers had disappeared one by one. Now only the lone lamb was left.
A few days ago, the lamb saw a big grey wolf take away one of the sheep with his own eyes. The lamb thought that his mother and brothers must have been eaten by the big grey wolf.
“Even though I’m small and can’t beat the big grey wolf, I can outsmart him,” the lamb thought. He remembered the story his mother told him about “The Wolf and the Lamb” and encouraged himself, “Don’t be afraid!”
Since the big grey wolf stole a lamb last time, the ranger had seen traces of the big grey wolf several times. The ranger wanted to catch the big grey wolf. He dug a big trap in an open area in front of the forest, hoping to catch the big grey wolf.
The big grey wolf the ranger saw was Clumsy Wolf’s uncle, the head of the grey wolves in Deep Mountain Town. The grey wolf leader was an adult male wolf who had just received a hunting permit from the Forest Kingdom.
Eager to hunt, as the Forest Kingdom forbids animals from killing each other, the big grey wolf decided to try his luck in a human village. The big grey wolf wandered around, looking for a target. One day, he came to the ranger’s place, where the smell of meat in the yard made his mouth water.
A month ago, he finally stole a sheep. After tasting the delicious mutton, he couldn’t forget it. He saw a sheep pen not far from the ranger’s house with a lamb inside; next to the sheep pen was a pigpen with a piglet. So, the big grey wolf often wandered near the forest, waiting for a chance to strike.
The lamb said to Clumsy Wolf, “Dear Mr. Wolf, can you take me home?”
“Sure. I’m always happy to help,” Clumsy Wolf replied.
There was a small wooden bridge over the river, and the lamb needed to cross it to go home.
The small wooden bridge was not much better than a single-plank bridge. It had only two logs, and walking on it made them sway.
The lamb took two steps on the bridge, saw it shaking, quickly retreated, and said to Clumsy Wolf, “I’m scared, I don’t dare go first.”
Clumsy Wolf took the lead, saying, “I’ll go first, and you follow me.”
Clumsy Wolf walked to the middle of the bridge, and the bridge swayed even more because the lamb was kicking it with his hooves on the other side. He wanted to flip the bridge to make Clumsy Wolf fall into the river.
The bridge was much stronger than the lamb thought. Clumsy Wolf wasn’t afraid of the shaking; he found it fun. Although he swayed several times, Clumsy Wolf stood firm and didn’t fall off the bridge.
Seeing that his first plan failed, the lamb came up with another one. He jumped onto the bridge, lowered his head, and charged at Clumsy Wolf!
The lamb knocked Clumsy Wolf off the bridge!
Splash! Clumsy Wolf fell into the river, creating a huge splash.
The lamb ran across the wooden bridge and rushed home.
The river wasn’t wide, and Clumsy Wolf could swim. He soon swam to the shore.
Clumsy Wolf shook off the water and sniffed around in the grass. He quickly found the lamb’s trail.
Clumsy Wolf said, “I saved the lamb from the river, and he pushed me into the river. Is he trying to tell me the river is fun?”
Clumsy Wolf walked along the path and soon came to an open area. It was rare to see such an open space in the forest. The ranger had cleared a vegetable garden here.
Next to the garden was a large camphor tree. Clumsy Wolf walked on the grass near the camphor tree, where the lamb’s trail suddenly disappeared.
“Help! Help!” Clumsy Wolf heard cries for help.
Pushing aside the waist-high grass, Clumsy Wolf found a deep trap. The lamb was inside, shouting, “Help! Save me!”
After pushing Clumsy Wolf off the bridge, the lamb had run away in panic, not noticing the trap the ranger had dug. He fell right into it.
Seeing no sign of the ranger coming to save him, the lamb began to cry. “I’m doomed. I’ll never get out. I’ll starve to death in this trap. If I had known this, I would have let that big grey wolf eat me.”
Clumsy Wolf looked into the trap. It was deep and narrow, and it took him a while to see the lamb. Clumsy Wolf was shocked when he saw the lamb, and the lamb was equally surprised to see Clumsy Wolf.
The lamb thought, “I shouldn’t have said I’d rather be eaten by the big grey wolf. And now here he is. What should I do? This time, I’m really going to be eaten by the big grey wolf.”
But Clumsy Wolf had no intention of eating the lamb. He just wanted to rescue him. Of course, Clumsy Wolf’s method was a bit clumsy. He jumped into the trap.
As I mentioned, the trap was deep and narrow. It was designed by the ranger specifically to catch the big grey wolf, so it was very cleverly made. Once an animal fell in, it was almost impossible to escape.
Now, the lamb was in the trap, and so was Clumsy Wolf.
When Clumsy Wolf jumped in, the lamb thought very little of him. The lamb thought, “This guy is both greedy and stupid. He jumped into the trap just to eat me!”
But Clumsy Wolf was happy to see the lamb. He hugged the lamb and said, “Lamb, I’m here to save you!”
The trap was so small that the lamb knew he had nowhere to run, so he closed his eyes and waited for Clumsy Wolf to bite him. But after waiting for a long time without feeling any bite, he opened his eyes to see Clumsy Wolf trying to jump out of the trap.
So, the clever lamb came up with an idea. He said to Clumsy Wolf, “If you really want to save me, I have an idea.”
“What idea?”
“You crouch down so I can step on your back
. Then I can jump out of the trap. After I get out, I’ll find someone to rescue you.”
Clumsy Wolf immediately crouched down and let the lamb step on his back. But the trap was so deep that even with Clumsy Wolf’s help, the lamb couldn’t reach the top.
The lamb said, “I need to step on your shoulders to get out.”
Clumsy Wolf let the lamb step on his shoulders and jump up, but it still wasn’t enough.
The lamb said, “Just a little more. If I can step on your head, I’ll definitely get out!”
So, Clumsy Wolf let the lamb step on his head.
The lamb stepped on Clumsy Wolf’s head and jumped lightly, successfully getting out of the trap.
“Lamb, pull me up!” Clumsy Wolf said.
“Wait here,” the lamb replied. “I’ll find someone to save you!”
Clumsy Wolf waited in the trap for the lamb to find help. The lamb, however, hopped and skipped all the way home.
“Hmph, big grey wolf, I’ll let you starve to death in that trap!” the lamb said viciously once he was far away.
