A Birthday Parcel for the Crocodile

Little Crocodile has a long snout and a very poor memory. This morning, however, he hasn’t forgotten anything and is drinking tea in the yard.

Someone knocks on the door, and it’s Mr. Ostrich the postman, delivering a large parcel for Little Crocodile.

Little Crocodile opens the parcel and finds a beautifully wrapped gift box inside.

“Oh dear, what holiday is it today?” Little Crocodile wonders with his long snout open wide. He thinks for a long time and then says, “Today is May 3rd, it’s not a holiday.”

But why did someone send him a gift?

He unwraps the beautiful wrapping paper to find a cardboard box inside. He opens the cardboard box and finds an even smaller beautifully wrapped gift box inside.

A small note is attached to the little gift box. It reads:

“Wish you happiness today!”

“Why should today be happy?” Little Crocodile opens the outer wrapping paper and lifts the lid to find an even smaller gift box inside. A note on the gift box reads:

“What day is it today?”

Little Crocodile blinks and thinks for a long time but can’t figure out what day it is. Smacking his lips, he says, “Today is May 3rd, just an ordinary day!”

He rips off the wrapping paper, opens the lid, and finds an even smaller gift box inside. A colorful note is attached to the box, which reads:

“Today is your birthday, happy birthday!”

“Oh dear!” Little Crocodile exclaims with wide eyes, “Is today May 3rd? I forgot today is May 3rd. No, I didn’t forget today is May 3rd, but I forgot May 3rd is my birthday!”

Little Crocodile tears off the paper and opens the lid to find a small notebook inside. The notebook says:

“Birthday gift for Little Crocodile—Notebook!”

“A notebook? What’s the big deal? It was packed in so many boxes and wrapped in so much paper, I thought it was some kind of jewel. This little bear sure likes to joke around!”

It turns out the birthday gift was from Little Bear.

Just as Little Crocodile puts down the notebook, the phone rings.

“Hello,” Little Crocodile answers, and hears the voice of Big Brother Otter, “Did you get the book you promised to borrow for me?”

“Oh dear!” Little Crocodile exclaims. When he says “Oh dear,” it means he forgot something. “Oh dear, I just came from Uncle Hippo’s, but I completely forgot about it. I’m really sorry, I even forgot today is my birthday.”

“Happy birthday,” Big Brother Otter says helplessly, “And I hope you forget less often.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t forget anymore. I’ll remember to borrow the book for you!” Little Crocodile apologetically puts down the phone and quickly grabs a pen to write in the notebook from Little Bear:

“Go to Uncle Hippo’s house to borrow ‘The Adventures of Little Clever Fish’ for Big Brother Otter, don’t forget!” He even draws two small circles under the words “don’t forget.”

At this moment, he feels that Little Bear’s gift is wonderful and very important to him.

He wants to call Little Bear to thank him but can’t remember Little Bear’s phone number. He keeps hitting his head, but it doesn’t help.

Suddenly, he wonders if his good friend Little Bear might have written his own phone number in the notebook?

He turns to the back where the contact list is and sees the first line reads: “Little Bear, Phone: 7686966.”

“Oh dear!” he exclaims again, “Oh dear, I forgot such an easy number.”

Little Crocodile quickly dials the number, and Little Bear’s voice comes through the phone: “Is that Little Crocodile? You haven’t called in three months. Did you disappear from the earth or forget about your old friend?”

“I haven’t forgotten, I haven’t forgotten. Honestly, I really wanted to remember your phone number. The first time you told me, I wrote it on a playing card, but I lost the card; the second time, I wrote it on a cookie bag, but after eating the cookies, I threw the bag away; the third time, I wrote it on my palm, but when I washed my hands by the river, I accidentally left it for the fish. Oh dear, my memory is so bad!”

“This time, you won’t forget, right?” Little Bear says.

“No, definitely not, you wrote it in my notebook.” Little Crocodile kisses the notebook and says, “Thank you, there’s no better birthday gift than this. It’s more precious than jewels. I must… oh dear!”

“What’s wrong, did you forget something again?” Little Bear asks on the phone.

“Oh dear, I forgot tomorrow is your birthday.” Little Crocodile says as he takes out his pen, “Dear Little Bear, tomorrow is your birthday. I’ll write it in my notebook, and I’ll never forget it again. I’ll give you the most precious birthday gift…”

“Oh dear,” this time it’s Little Bear’s turn to exclaim, “Oh dear, I really have to thank you!”
