A Romantic Fairy Tale
If only she could meet a man so deeply in love with her, she would cherish him and marry him.
He was an electric utility worker, a seemingly insignificant one, whose daily tasks included collecting electricity bills and repairing electrical issues in countless households.
The girl ran a small pastry shop by the roadside, and business was slow at first. He was the only one wandering around her shop. They didn’t know each other; she had called the customer service hotline to get his help. Due to the high electricity usage for baking, he thoroughly checked her electrical setup to ensure safety.
On her first day of business, with no customers, she wore a gloomy expression and wasn’t very warm toward him. He suddenly suggested that she make a birthday cake, saying it was his girlfriend’s birthday and he wanted her to help deliver it. The girl’s face lit up with a smile because it was her first business transaction.
She quickly made a beautiful cake, knowing exactly what girls like these days. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she looked at the sincere electrician with bright, sparkling eyes and said, “You are my first customer, so you can make a small request as a gift from me.” He asked if she could make a rainbow on the cake, explaining that as an electrician, he wanted to give his girlfriend a rainbow.
The girl laughed knowingly and agreed, promising to make a seven-color rainbow that his girlfriend would love. His face turned red, and he shyly thanked her. She chuckled secretly.
She delivered the cake to the designated location and met a girl named Yulian. Yulian took the cake with a faint “thank you,” placed it aside, and went on with her work.
The girl reminded her that the rainbow on the cake was specifically requested by him for her. Yulian impatiently replied that she was busy. The girl felt a bit disheartened but returned to her shop.
Back at the shop, seeing his eager eyes, she couldn’t bear to tell him the truth and lied that his girlfriend was delighted to receive the cake and thanked him. His face beamed with happiness. He told her that his girlfriend loved cakes and he wanted her to celebrate her birthday every month.
From then on, he came every month, ordering a small cake with a rainbow made of cream on top, asking the girl to deliver it to Yulian. However, every time Yulian received the cake, her expression was always indifferent, sometimes even annoyed.
The girl thought Yulian might not like him. But each time she saw his eager eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to tell the truth, not wanting to hurt this devoted man. Sometimes, she resolved to tell him the truth, not wanting him to waste time and money on Yulian, but the words never came out. She hoped that perhaps with time, Yulian would be moved, and the rainbow would eventually blossom.
And so, he came on time every month, and she made the cake as requested.
Suddenly, he seemed to disappear from the face of the earth and didn’t show up for two months.
Today marked the one-year anniversary of her shop, and she remembered it was also Yulian’s birthday.
But still, there was no sign of him. She worried that Yulian might have broken up with him but didn’t know how to contact him. On a whim, she dialed the customer service hotline, knowing that he would come if she called. He did come, just like before, checking all the electrical lines in the shop.
She asked if he still wanted a rainbow cake since today was his girlfriend’s birthday. Her heart pounded with an inexplicable rhythm. He replied, “Yes, one last cake. Today is Yulian’s engagement day, but not with him.”
She was shocked by this unfortunate ending and even more surprised by his calm acceptance of heartbreak.
She quickly made a beautiful cake and asked if he still wanted a rainbow on it. He said, “Yes, but this time with a red rose on the rainbow.”
Her heart ached subtly, thinking what a wonderful man he was, and how Yulian didn’t appreciate him. If she could meet a man so devoted to her, she would cherish him and marry him.
She said, “Thank you for always servicing my shop, and as my loyal customer, this last cake is on the house.”
“No,” he said firmly, “this one cannot be free.” He took the cake, sniffed it, said it smelled wonderful, then handed it back to her and said, “This is for you. Today is your birthday.”
She was stunned and asked how he knew it was her birthday.
He replied, “You mentioned it on your shop’s opening day. You chose your birthday as the day to open your shop. Today marks one year since then.”
She said, “I thought you were an honest guy, but I didn’t expect you to be so thoughtful. So, what’s the meaning of the red rose on my birthday cake?” He looked into her eyes and said, “I like you.”
She playfully smiled and said, “I don’t understand. What does ‘like’ mean?”
He said loudly, “I love you!”
She blushed and lowered her head, then quickly raised it and asked, “Weren’t you deeply in love with Yulian? How did you fall for me so quickly?”
With a mysterious smile, he said, “Actually, it’s time to tell you this secret. Yulian is my cousin’s wife.”
“What! Yulian is your cousin’s wife?”
He looked into her eyes and said, “If it weren’t for that, how could I, a simple electrician, have the chance to meet you!”
The girl suddenly understood, her face blooming like the rose on the cake.
